Assignment

You are a team of international volunteers working for the NGO AVSAR in Dharavi. Your task is to facilitate a conversation between the organizers of the upcoming protest against the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, relevant government authorities, and the IT Business Association of Mumbai to discuss the residents’ concerns and to see if some level of cooperation and consultation can be reached for future development plans. Follow the general instructions sheet you received for completing the assignment.


Step 1: Situational Assessment.

1. Who do you see as the primary beneficiaries of your work (who is your client)?

Dharavi citizens, Government, IT Business Association of Mumbia

2. Who are the stakeholders?

Mumbai citizens at large, Government (state), Developers


3. What cultural issues do you need to consider?

Language, religious diversity, gender roles, diversity of ethnic groups, cultural norms about philanthropy, collectivism.

4. What issues of power or difference should be taken into consideration?

Wealth, politics, business lobby groups, caste system, no land rights for Dharavi people


5. Is there someone or a group with whom you should consider partnering in your efforts?

Association of slum dwellers, gov-t, grass-root organizations, local citizens

6. What other factors should be taken into consideration?  


 Previous experiences, media/ international perception

Step 2: Develop a strategy for your intervention.

1. Who are the direct beneficiaries? Who else will be participating?

Direct beneficiaries: Dharavi citizens and community leaders engaged in protest activities.
Other participants: Relevant government authorities, and the IT Business Association of Mumbai


2. What are the goals and expected outcomes of the intervention?

To facilitate a conversation between the organizers of the upcoming protest against the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, relevant government authorities, and the IT Business Association of Mumbai to discuss the residents’ concerns and to see if some level of cooperation and consultation can be reached for future development plans.

3. What tool or processes did you decide to apply for this project? Why?

Caucus Within Group: Forum/Meeting with protest organizers to gauge their goals/intentions in order to organize what they would like to occur within their neighborhood.
  • Outcome would be a graphical and or time line representation of their vision(s)
Trust building through time line activity: Have separate time lines to draw out common ground between participants (people to people)

Expectations, Hopes, and Fears of each participant


4. What are the strengths of this tool or approach? What challenges do you need to be aware of?
Strengths:
  • Forum: To be able to organize objectives.
  • Time line: To establish a common ground and build trust
Challenges:
  • Initiating dialog
  • Meetings could be long and tiring
5. What facilitation techniques (e.g. card and chart, bulls eye, etc) might be helpful during your session?

Time line (trust building), card and chart


6. How did you address issues of power and difference in your approach?

By using activities that make connections on a personal level, we will attempt to help participants see past roles and differences
We will facilitate in a way that ensures equal amounts of participation


7. What is the goal of your intervention?

To peacefully reach a common ground that is respectful of each groups interest.


8. What is the time line (i.e., Will the intervention be a single event such as a workshop or meeting? How long will it take? Will it be multiple events? Over what time span?  


Progression of meetings:
1st: Forum within group
2nd: Meeting with the three groups to talk over issues/ possible solutions
3rd: Creating a combined vision that aligns the interests of each group participating
